Everybody thought Mario Cuomo would be a great candidate for President during the late eighties and early nineties. He has charisma, he was smart, and was an effective governor of the state of New York. He would even tell people he was interested to run, but never would run.
Today, in the 21st congressional district we are seeing a similar phenomenon. We have former Assemblyman Paul Tonko, the beloved Assemblyman from what is now George Amedore's Assembly district. Now chair of NYSDERA, the state energy research authority, he has hinted that he is exploring a run, but has yet to announce while six other candidates have gotten into the race and built up an political base.
Tonko was very popular as an Assemblyman. In a traditionally Republican Mohawk Valley, he was able to get more then 80% of the vote in past elections. If he ran he would be a shoo in for the primary, and would also easily win the general election. His style of campaigning with touch the hearts of the people living in the valley and beyond, with hope and promise.
The former chair of the Assembly Energy Committee and head of NYSERDA, he knows what is possible in politics with energy today. He has constantly pushed for renewable sources of energy and fought the State Senate for a better state energy policy. He also has worked assiduously to bring new business to Mohawk Valley, and is his chairmanship on the legislative Commission on Rural Resources fought for policies to bring more life to our communities.
But he's not running. Schenectady County Democrats where quick to endorse him and Jack McEneny has said he'd be the “only first tier candidate”, but he still has yet to announce. Let's hope that soon Mr. Amsterdam will make up his mind to run or not run.
