Let's talk about sex. That's the tag line to this film that looks at the provocative and innovative man that forced our society to think about sexuality in the repressed 1960s. As you might have guessed with this rated 'R' film, there was a lot of sex in this film. Much of it was not directly related to the theme or ideas, but to shock and make the viewer question his own beliefs on sexuality.
It is hard to understand sexuality in the way we saw it in the 1950s. Simply said, out-of-wedlock sex, masturbation, oral sex, and the alike are all accepted in one way or another. Child sex and bestiality are still incredibly taboo. The film reminded us of this and challenged us to think outside of the box, and look at sex the way that Kinsey say it: a biological function of life. It not only serves to create offspring but to give pleasure to partners. One could question if the film was really about sexuality as much as being about cultural rebellion and scientific cult circles.
Like other films that fictionalize history, it was incredibly inaccurate. Kinsey could have never shown pictures of penises or celebrated sexuality in a free spirited way shown in the film. The religious right would have destroyed him. His scientific methodology was far more robots then what was demonstrated in the film, though it did accurately portray how his methods came increasingly under controversy. Kinsey lived outside of the limits in society. His eccentricity started to show as pressure to destroy him grew. The inner circle of Sex Institute researchers rapidly started to fall apart as time went on.
In conclusion, it was an excellent film. The blatant sexuality demonstrated in the film may offend you or make you uncomfortable, but that's what it's intent is. You should leave the theater questioning your relation to sex and why we put such limits on it. To have sex is to be human, and when we finally accept this fact we will be come a more open and free society.
