Politics are an interest to all people: they are all expansive, they are in all realms of life. In computers, politics determine what we can program and what resources we can utilize, and the sharing of our code. Roads can only be built with broad consensus and revenues. The federal government decides through action or inaction the height of bumpers on your truck. Local government defines what your community will look like and what you can do in your backyard. The state creates parks, decides what you can do there (snowmobile, ATV), among many other functions. Government is important in all spheres of life: you can never escape it, no matter where you run.
Politics is a fundamental conflict: not between good and evil, but between friend and political enemy. It goes so deep, it is so radical. One should always consider downtrodden minority groups, particularly those ignored by larger society. There is a difference between being a numerical minority and powerless, and the one of the dismissed by bourgeois society. There are some groups that modern society holds in total contempt, and tries to exterminate in an effort to create a more 'perfect/liberal' society. Yet, even those groups have an important role in politics. Everybody from people who support slavery/segregation, to hardworking silent majoritarians, to religious wackos and gun nuts, to rednecks, deserve at least some basic respect, and occasional advocacy for their positions, even if they are 'wrong' and you find the morally pungent. The Germans probably had good reasons for attempting to exterminate the jews, but few people ever dare to argue this position.
Politics is about taking a passionate stand, and fighting for your beliefs, even with seemingly seemingly boring things. Our fight for a neighborhood issue is a fight for preserving and improving our lifeworld: in the infamous words of Tip O Neal: All Politics is Local
. You always have to campaign at the grassroots, you can never escape the back to roots fedora/stetson hat wearers in smoke filled rooms, driving around in either Cadillacs or pickup trucks (as in Texas and other rural locales).
